Danakil Depression
The Danakil Depression is the northern part of the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia, and is a geological depression that has resulted from the divergence of three tectonic plates in the Horn of Africa. The Danakil Depression is a plain approximately 200 by 50 km in the north of the Afar Region of Ethiopia, near the border with Eritrea. It is approximately 125 meters below sea level and is bordered to the west by the Ethiopian Plateau and to the east by the Danakil Alps, beyond which lies the Red Sea.
The area is often referred to as the cradle of humanity. In 1974, Donald Johanson and his colleagues found the famous Australopithecus afarensis fossil Lucy, which has been dated to be 3.2 million years old and many other fossils of ancient hominins have been uncovered prompting many paleontologists to suggest that is where the human species first evolved.
The Depression has developed as a result of Africa and Asia moving apart, causing rifting and volcanic activity. Erosion, inundation by the sea, and the rising and falling of the ground resulted in the formation of the depression. Sedimentary rocks like sandstone and limestone are unconformable and are overlain by basalt from the extensive lava flows.
The Danakil Depression is the hottest place on Earth in terms of year-round average temperatures. It is also one of the lowest places on the planet at 100 meters below sea level and the area is dry for most of the year. The Awash River forms a series of salt lakes where the river dries and does not reach the Indian Ocean. Among the numerous geological points of interest to tourists are the hydrothermal system of Dallol and Yellow Lake.
Mount Ayelu is the westernmost and older of the two volcanoes and it is situated at the southern end of the Danakil Depression. The other active volcano, Erta Ale, is one of numerous crater lakes of lava from the Earth’s mantle. Additionally, the area contains the Dallol sulfur springs or hot springs. These wet environments at the Danakil Depression are being studied to help understand how life may exist on other planets and moons. Many microorganisms living here are extremophile microbes of interest to astrobiologists.
